Instagram, a social media platform owned by Meta via its blog post said, “We want to make it as hard as possible for someone you’ve blocked to contact you again. Now when you block someone, you’ll also have the option to block other accounts they may have or create, making it more difficult for them to interact with you on Instagram.” Instagram upgraded its blocking functionality last year, enabling you to block not only a single account but also any future accounts that users may create. You can now block any current accounts the user may have thanks to this update. Since these accounts will now be blocked automatically, we anticipate our community will need to block 4 million fewer accounts each week based on the results of the new change’s initial tests.
Instagram claims that more than one in five users with substantial followings has enabled Hidden Words since it was introduced last year, providing them with a potent tool to automatically exclude dangerous information from their comments and message requests. It has been discovered that Hidden Words has shown to be quite successful in keeping people secure. On average, individuals see 40% fewer potentially objectionable comments when Hidden Words is enabled for comments. “We want to help more creators benefit from this protection, so we’re starting to test automatically turning on Hidden Words for Creator accounts. Everyone will continue to be able to turn these settings on or off at any time and build a custom list with additional words, phrases, and emojis they may want to hide,” the company stated.
Moreover, Instagram has expanded Hidden Words to cover Story replies, so offensive replies from people you don’t follow will be sent to your Hidden Requests folder and you never have to see them. This functionality supports new languages, including Farsi, Turkish, Russian, Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil. The filter to spot and hide more intentional misspellings of offensive terms has also been improved, for instance, if someone uses a “1” instead of an “i”.
However, nudges can lessen the number of offensive comments on Instagram, which is why Instagram is adding more of them. A new message will now urge users to think carefully before responding to a comment that our technologies warn them may be offensive. For users whose apps are set to English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Chinese, or Arabic, these nudges are currently available. “We’ve also started reminding people to be respectful in DMs when sending a message request to a creator. This nudge helps people remember that there’s a real person on the other side of their DM request, and encourages more respectful outreach to people they may not know.
